When the engine's piston compresses the fuel-air mixture to its fullest extent (at the end of the compression stroke), the car's "brain," the ECU, sends a signal to the ignition coil.
The ignition coil receives this signal and converts the low-voltage 12V power from the car's battery into a high-voltage power of 15,000 to 30,000V—over 100 times higher than household voltage.
This high-voltage power is transmitted via high-voltage wires to the spark plug's center electrode, which then "jumps" across the gap between the center electrode and the side electrode, generating a spark with a temperature exceeding 2000°C.
This spark instantly ignites the compressed fuel-air mixture. The mixture burns and expands, pushing the piston downward, which in turn drives the crankshaft, thus generating power for the car.
The entire process takes only 0.01-0.02 seconds, faster than the blink of an eye, and it repeats dozens of times per second. Just thinking about it makes you feel "tough."
