The secondary coil has a significantly larger number of turns (up to tens of thousands of turns), connected at one end to the primary coil and at the other end to the spark plug via a high-voltage wire. When the ignition switch is closed, current flows through the primary coil, generating a magnetic field, which is intensified by the iron core. When the switch is opened, the magnetic field rapidly disappears, and the sudden change in magnetic flux induces high voltage in the secondary coil. This process repeats dozens of times per second during engine operation.
The spark plug's seemingly simple structure embodies sophisticated engineering: the top terminal connects to the high-voltage wire, the middle insulator (typically made of alumina ceramic, which offers exceptional heat resistance and insulation properties) isolates the high voltage, and the bottom center electrode and side electrodes form a gap (called the "spark plug gap," typically 0.6-1.1mm). When the high-voltage power breaks through the gap, a spark powerful enough to ignite the fuel-air mixture is generated.
Depending on the electrode material, spark plugs can be categorized as nickel alloy, platinum, or iridium. These materials vary significantly in their high-temperature resistance, conductivity, and service life. Nickel alloy spark plugs are less expensive but have a shorter service life (typically 30,000-50,000 kilometers), making them suitable for budget-friendly family cars.
Platinum spark plugs offer greater heat resistance and a service life of 60,000-80,000 kilometers, making them suitable for most mid-range vehicles. Iridium spark plugs (some with a dual-electrode design) have a melting point of 2410°C, excellent conductivity, and a service life exceeding 100,000 kilometers. They also offer stable ignition under extreme operating conditions and are widely used in turbocharged engines and high-performance vehicles.
Spark plugs operate in extremely harsh environments: they are subjected to prolonged exposure to temperatures of 400-800°C, pressures of tens of megapascals, and corrosion from combustion products. Consequently, performance degradation is inevitable.
Spark plug wear (increased electrode gap), carbon deposits (carbon particles adhere to the engine due to incomplete combustion of fuel and gas), or oil contamination can reduce ignition energy, leading to problems such as difficult cold starts, unstable idling, and excessive exhaust emissions. During routine maintenance, regularly check the condition of the spark plugs.
If the electrodes are severely worn, the insulators are cracked, or there is excessive carbon deposits, they should be replaced promptly. Also, note that spark plug gap requirements vary between vehicle models. When replacing, adjust the gap strictly according to the manufacturer's specifications to avoid ignition failure due to an excessive gap or electrode erosion due to an insufficient gap.
In turbocharged or direct injection engines, the coordination between the ignition coil and the spark plug is even more demanding. These engines operate at higher combustion chamber pressures and temperatures (turbocharged engines can achieve compression ratios exceeding 10:1, and direct injection engines can reach injection pressures of 350 bar).
This requires the ignition coil to provide a stable, higher voltage output, while also requiring the spark plug to possess enhanced high-temperature and corrosion resistance to ensure ignition reliability under extreme operating conditions.
For example, some turbocharged models utilize "high-energy ignition coils" with output voltages exceeding 45,000 V. These, combined with iridium-platinum spark plugs, effectively address ignition stability issues in high-pressure environments and avoid "detonation" (abnormal combustion caused by ignition delay).
